Canyons, Dunes and Falls
A pre-dawn 4WD run into the Namib Naukluft dunes to climb them and walk out to Deadvlei, and an open-air Landcruiser game drive on the Etosha salt pan.

The route
Sixteen nights from Cape Town to Victoria Falls through four countries, driven by the travellers themselves with a guide leading. Compass supply the 4×4.
The Cederberg and Clanwilliam come first in the Olifants valley, then remote tracks across Namaqualand and a quiver tree forest to Springbok, and the border into Namibia at Vioolsdrift. Ai Ais Richtersveld follows, then Fish River Canyon at sunrise, the second largest canyon in the world, with the Canyon Roadhouse nearby.
The Namib Naukluft is the set piece. A pre-dawn run in 4WD goes out to the dunes to climb one before the heat arrives and then walk into Deadvlei, a white clay pan holding the blackened skeletons of camelthorn trees that died centuries ago and have not rotted since, because there is no moisture there to rot them.
The Tropic of Capricorn is crossed to Swakopmund on the Atlantic, then the coast road past the Zelia wreck, through Himba and Herero country to Vingerklip. Etosha follows, with an open-air Landcruiser game drive on the pan, then the Kavango region and the Okavango river to Rundu, East Caprivi and Mudumu, and into Botswana for Chobe and a sunset cruise on the river. The Seloko Plains and the Kazuma Forest Reserve carry the route on towards the falls. Prices are quoted in US dollars, per person. No wildlife sighting can be promised, and the desert sections are long, hot and a long way from anywhere. Four countries in sixteen nights works here because southern Africa’s distances are covered on good gravel and empty tar, and the border formalities are handled by the guide rather than the traveller.
