The route

Eighty-five nights and eleven countries, the longest African expedition Compass runs and among the longest guided rides offered anywhere. Riders may bring their own bike, which is the headline option, or hire one at the rates in the operator’s table.

The first half is southern Africa at a pace that allows for it: the Cederberg and Namaqualand, the Orange River into Namibia, Ai Ais and Fish River Canyon, Burgsdorf, the Namib Naukluft and Sesriem with Dune 45 at sunrise and Deadvlei after it, Swakopmund, Vingerklip and Etosha, then the Caprivi Strip, the Kavango and Lianshulu, Chobe in Botswana, and three nights at Victoria Falls.

The Friendship Bridge crosses into Zambia for Lusaka, Kapishya Hot Springs and Shiwa N’gandu, an English country house built in the bush in the 1920s and still in the same family. Tanzania follows at Lake Tanganyika, with Lakeshore Lodge, Kigoma and a boat to Gombe Stream for chimpanzee trekking.

Rwanda and Kigali lead into Uganda, with Mutanda Lake Resort and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for gorilla trekking, then the equator crossing, Kampala and Jinja at the source of the Nile on Lake Victoria. Prices are quoted in US dollars, per person, and no wildlife sighting can be promised. Nearly three months is a different proposition from a holiday, and the economics follow: shipping a bike out is the cheaper route at this length, and the published price is what it costs to keep a supported group moving across eleven borders for twelve weeks. Anyone who cannot clear that much leave will find the same ground broken into shorter expeditions elsewhere in the operator’s African range.
