The route

Twenty nights around both islands of New Zealand, from the volcanic plateau to the Southern Alps and the fiords. Riders may bring their own bike, or hire one from a long list of models.

The North Island opens it out of Auckland: Whangarei Falls, the Bay of Islands, Cape Reinga at the very top, Opononi and the Waipoua kauri forest, where one tree is reckoned to be around two thousand years old. The Coromandel loop, the Waikato and Rotorua follow, with Huka Falls and Mount Ruapehu on the way down to Wellington.

The Cook Strait ferry crosses to the Marlborough Sounds and the Queen Charlotte Drive, then Nelson, the Takaka Hill, Collingwood and the Te Waikoropupu springs, which hold some of the clearest fresh water ever measured. Blenheim, Kaikoura, Hanmer Springs and the Lewis Pass lead to the west coast at Greymouth and Westport, with the Pancake Rocks and blowholes at Punakaiki.

Franz Josef, Haast and Mount Aspiring National Park follow, then Queenstown on Lake Wakatipu, Invercargill and its motorcycle museum, the Southern Scenic Route and Te Anau, with Milford Sound in Fiordland beyond. The Catlins, the petrified forest at Curio Bay, Larnach Castle, Aoraki Mount Cook, Lake Pukaki and Inland Route 72 close the route into Christchurch. Prices are quoted in US dollars, per person, and vary by bike. Twenty nights is enough to do both islands without skipping the parts that make each of them different: the North Island is volcanic, green and populated, while the South Island is alpine, emptier and colder, and a trip that does only one of them is only half the country.
