Road Trip Across the Kimberley - Exploring Australia's Untamed Outback

Sleep in a tent with no phone signal at a cattle station that’s been working since 1945, in the middle of a landscape that’s been striped like this for 350 million years – seventeen nights through one of the last remote corners of Australia.

The route

Eighteen days across the Kimberley by 4×4, which is one of the least populated and least accessible regions on earth, and the only trip in this operator’s range that genuinely requires the vehicle it specifies.

Kununurra opens it after a flight from Perth, with the striated rock of Mirima National Park. Purnululu follows for two nights under canvas, and the Bungle Bungles there are banded sandstone domes around 350 million years old that were essentially unknown to the outside world until the 1980s, with Cathedral Gorge and the narrow slot of Echidna Chasm among them.

El Questro gets two nights of tented camp, with Emma Gorge, the thermal pools at Zebedee Springs and a boat cruise up Chamberlain Gorge. Mount Elizabeth Station then provides a night on the Gibb River Road, a working cattle homestead dating from 1945 and deliberately off-grid with no signal of any kind.

Bell Gorge follows for two nights at a tented lodge on the land of the Imintji community, with a hundred-metre waterfall. Fitzroy Crossing gives access to Tunnel Creek, a cave running three-quarters of a kilometre through a limestone range with Aboriginal rock paintings inside it. Broome closes the trip with three nights, a pearling town with a Japanese cemetery holding the divers who died working the beds, Cable Beach, and dinosaur footprints exposed at low tide near Gantheaume Point. Original Travel include the 4×4, internal flights, accommodation, the tours, concierge access, a 24-hour helpline and carbon absorption. International flights and most meals are separate. Prices run from 5,650 to 7,350 pounds per person.
