On the Edge of Canada - A Journey Through Newfoundland's Wild Landscapes
A place where the Earth’s mantle sits exposed on the surface, a fishing village first used by French sailors four hundred years ago, and icebergs that give a whole town its nickname – fifteen nights on the edge of the continent.

The route
Sixteen days around Newfoundland, which is the furthest east in North America, has its own half-hour time zone and feels less like Canada than anywhere else in it.
St John’s opens it with two nights, one of the oldest cities on the continent, with the painted row houses of the Battery stacked above the harbour narrows and Quidi Vidi below. Trinity follows for three nights, a fishing town that has barely changed since the nineteenth century, with the Gun Hill Trail above it and Terra Nova National Park nearby, home to lynx, black bear and the rare Newfoundland marten.
Fogo Island then gets three nights by ferry, and it is the pick of the trip. Brimstone Head and Turpin’s Trail give the walking, and Tilting was fished from by the French in the sixteenth century before the Irish settled it, which is still audible in how people speak.
Twillingate follows for three nights and is known as the iceberg capital of the world, with a cruise out among them in season. Icebergs calve off Greenland and drift down this coast between spring and early summer, so timing decides what there is to see. The Long Point lighthouse has stood since 1876, and Boyd’s Cove has an interpretation centre on the Beothuk, the island’s indigenous people, who were wiped out by the 1820s. Gros Morne closes the trip with two nights, a fjord cruise on Western Brook Pond beneath six-hundred-metre cliffs, and the Tablelands, where the earth’s mantle is exposed at the surface. Original Travel include the hire car, ferries, accommodation, the cruises, concierge access, a 24-hour helpline and carbon absorption. International flights and most meals are separate. Prices run from 2,750 to 4,500 pounds per person.
