The route

Fifteen days through Alaska using a hire car for the road network and bush planes for the places it does not reach, which is most of the interesting ones.

Anchorage opens it, then two nights at Denali. Private vehicles are barred from most of the park road, so the guided transit bus is how it is seen, and Denali itself is the highest peak in North America at 6,190 metres and generates enough weather to stay hidden much of the time. Fairbanks follows with the reconstructed gold rush town at Pioneer Park and optional hot springs at Chena.

Copper Center then gives access to Wrangell-St Elias, the largest national park in the country, and Kennicott is reached by bush plane for two nights. The guided glacier hike there goes out onto the Root Glacier in crampons among blue ice caves, and the ghost town has a fourteen-storey red mill building left from the copper boom.

Knik Glacier follows, twenty-five miles long and five across, seen from a boat. Seward comes next via the musk ox farm at Palmer, which keeps the only domesticated herd in the world, and the full-day Kenai Fjords cruise covers a hundred miles with otters, sea lions, orcas and humpbacks about. The trip finishes with a guided brown bear walk in Katmai. Original Travel include the hire car, the bush flights, accommodation, the guided activities, concierge access, a 24-hour helpline and carbon absorption. International flights and most meals are separate. Prices run from 6,900 to 8,850 pounds per person, and no wildlife is ever promised.
