A Family Road Trip Through Namibia - Desert Dunes, Coastal Cool and Safari Sightings
Climb a dune older than most human civilisation, then a few days later track a leopard using the same radio-collar data the researchers use themselves – twelve family nights across Namibia’s deserts and wildlife reserves.
Tell us your trip details and we'll put together a complimentary Stradora Expedition Pack for the journey.
The route
Thirteen days through Namibia by 4×4 with children in mind, and Namibia suits a family self-drive better than almost anywhere in Africa: the roads are good, the distances are honest and malaria is largely absent from the south.
Windhoek opens it, then a night at Kalkrand in the Kalahari with a sunset game drive and a sunrise walk among giraffe, kudu, zebra and oryx. Sesriem follows for two nights. The canyon there is a kilometre and a half long through fifteen-million-year-old rock, and Sossusvlei has the highest dunes in the world, with Deadvlei’s nine-hundred-year-old petrified camelthorn trees standing on the white pan below them.
Swakopmund then gets two nights, with a 4×4 trip to Sandwich Harbour where hundred-metre dunes drop straight into the Atlantic and flamingos feed in the lagoon. Twyfelfontein follows for two nights, a UNESCO site holding over two thousand rock engravings made by hunter-gatherers across several thousand years.
Etosha gets two nights after the Petrified Forest, with a game drive in the Ongava private reserve where lion, elephant and both rhino species are present. Okonjima closes the trip with two nights. Original Travel include the 4×4, accommodation, the guided drives and walks, concierge access, a 24-hour helpline and carbon absorption. International flights and most meals are separate. Prices run from 8,050 to 10,450 pounds per person, which makes this the dearest trip in the operator’s range per night. As always with wildlife, presence in a reserve is not a promise of a sighting, though Etosha’s waterholes in the dry season come closer than most places do.
