Mercedes-Benz Club: North Wales, Portmeirion & Snowdonia National Park

Portmeirion itself, the Italian-inspired village normally closed to traffic, opens up for a rare privilege reserved for small groups – three nights based at a historic coaching inn on Snowdonia’s doorstep.

3 nights through United Kingdom

Three nights in North Wales, based at Betws-y-Coed, on a Mercedes-Benz Club UK tour in members’ own cars.

Portmeirion is the reason to book. The village was built by Clough Williams-Ellis between 1925 and 1976 as an Italianate fantasy on a wooded estuary, it is closed to traffic, and this tour includes a drive through it in small groups, which is not something visitors can normally do.

The Royal Oak at Betws-y-Coed is the base, a former coaching inn at the gateway to Snowdonia, with a welcome dinner on the first night. The Portmeirion day takes in a guided tour of the village, a two-course lunch at Castell Deudraeth and free time to look round, as well as the drive through. The remaining day is left at leisure, with suggested routes through Eryri and the rest of North Wales in the road book, which is where the Llanberis Pass, the Horseshoe Pass and the roads out to the Llyn Peninsula come in.

Three nights at the Royal Oak, breakfast every morning, dinner on the first and last nights, a detailed road book with maps and drives, a commemorative rally plate, hotel parking, the Portmeirion entry, lunch, guided tour and drive-through, and ABTOT financial protection are all included. This is a club event, so it is open to Mercedes-Benz Club members in their own cars. Four days makes it a long weekend rather than a tour, and the village access is what separates it from any other North Wales trip. Betws-y-Coed is also about as well placed a base as North Wales offers, with the Llanberis Pass, the Horseshoe Pass and the coast all inside an hour.
