Miami & The Florida Keys

Ten nights with five of them in Miami Beach before the car even moves, and under 200 miles of driving in the whole trip. This is the least demanding thing they sell and makes no apology for it. Flights, car and hotels are arranged together from the UK.

Miami Beach is the base for the first half: the Art Deco strip, Little Havana, the Wynwood murals and the beach itself. From there the Everglades are a day out rather than a detour, with Highway 9336 running down to Flamingo on Florida Bay and the Robert Is Here fruit stand on the way, which is a roadside institution rather than a shop.

Then the Overseas Highway, which is the reason to come: forty-two bridges across open water, island to island, with two nights at Islamorada in the middle Keys. That stop is well chosen, because the reef between Key Largo and Islamorada is the best diving and snorkelling in the chain and most trips drive straight past it. Three nights in Key West finish the trip, with Duval Street, Sloppy Joe’s and the southernmost point in the continental United States.

Three stops in ten nights, and only two numbered driving days. The drive back up to Miami falls on the departure day. The itinerary is bespoke, so nights can be added or moved between the three bases, and departures are arranged around your dates. It suits anyone who wants sun, water and one genuinely great road, and has no interest at all in a schedule.
