14 nights through Mexico

The Baja peninsula is one of the great motorcycle roads and almost nobody rides it. This guided expedition runs its full length and back, fifteen days out of Los Angeles, fourteen nights and around 2,430 miles down Highway 1 to Land’s End at Cabo San Lucas. Intermediate to advanced riding experience is recommended, and for good reason.

The desert starts almost immediately. Beyond Ensenada the road enters the Valle de los Cirios, where the boojum trees and cardon cacti grow nowhere else on earth and look like nothing else either. San Ignacio is a genuine oasis in the middle of it, and beyond that the Devil’s Grade switchbacks drop to the Sea of Cortez at Bahia Concepcion, which is the sort of water people fly a long way to see.

La Paz leads to Cabo San Lucas and a free day, then the return crosses the Tropic of Cancer and climbs the Sierra de la Laguna through the old silver town of El Triunfo. The El Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO site and the largest protected area in Latin America, fills a later day, and the route finishes through the vineyards of the Valle de Guadalupe, which is Mexico’s own wine country and still largely undiscovered.

EAGLERIDER leads the ride, supplies the motorcycle, handles the border crossings and books all fourteen nights. Fuel, most meals and insurance are arranged separately. Days run from 70 to 283 miles. For riders who want somewhere genuinely different, with a guide who knows the fuel stops and the road surface, Baja is the most adventurous thing in the range.
