13 nights through United States

Thirteen nights through New England in the autumn, self-drive with the flights included, from Boston round to the Berkshires.

Boston takes the first three nights, with a guided walk of the Freedom Trail, Boston Common, Faneuil Hall, Harvard across the river and a food tour of the North End. Kennebunkport follows for two on the Maine coast, with Cape Porpoise and one of the oldest lighthouses in the state, with lobster shacks along the shore.

Jackson in the White Mountains comes next for three nights, with the cog railway to the summit of Mount Washington, the highest peak in the north-east and known for the worst recorded weather in the country, and the Appalachian Trail passing nearby. Manchester in Vermont follows for three by way of the Kancamagus Highway, which is routinely named among the best scenic drives in America, with the Green Mountains, moose in the woods and Lincoln’s family home at Hildene optional. Lenox and the Berkshires close the route.

Flights, fully insured car hire, the named activities and all the accommodation are included, and the price is quoted per person for the autumn peak. Fourteen days with three-night stops is the right pace for leaf season, when the colour moves south over about three weeks and no fortnight catches all of it. The dates are the whole trick, and accommodation across New England books out a long way ahead for October. Edith Wharton’s house and the Tanglewood concert grounds are both near Lenox, which makes the last two nights an easy finish.
