20 nights through Australia

Most people cross Australia along the bottom. This guided tour goes down the middle, 5,368 kilometres in twenty days from Darwin to Melbourne, through Kakadu and the Red Centre with Uluru at roughly the halfway mark.

The Top End opens the trip, and it is properly tropical from the first morning. A jumping crocodile cruise out of Darwin comes first, then Kakadu and a Yellow Water cruise, then Nitmiluk Gorge at Katherine and the thermal pools at Mataranka. Daly Waters and Tennant Creek follow down the Stuart Highway, with Karlu Karlu, the Devils Marbles, standing in the scrub along the way.

The Red Centre is the heart of it. Alice Springs leads to Kings Canyon, then Kata Tjuta and Uluru, which is worth the three thousand kilometres on its own. South of there the road runs to Coober Pedy, an opal town where much of the population lives underground and the tour goes down to see it, then the Flinders Ranges, the Clare Valley, Adelaide, the Grampians and the Great Ocean Road into Melbourne.
