The route

Fifteen nights through the American West from Las Vegas, linking the national parks on back roads rather than interstates. Riders may bring their own bike at the headline price, or hire one.

The Hoover Dam opens it, then Oatman on old Route 66, where burros wander down the main street, Lake Havasu, and Joshua Tree, where the trees are not trees at all but yucca. Palm Desert, Lake Arrowhead and Kernville follow in California, then Death Valley and Furnace Creek, the lowest and hottest ground in North America.

The route returns through Las Vegas and runs east by way of Seligman to the Grand Canyon, then Monument Valley and Mexican Hat. The Moki Dugway follows, three miles of unpaved switchbacks cut into a cliff face in the 1950s to carry uranium ore down from the mesa, with the Valley of the Gods below it.

Mesa Verde comes next, where cliff dwellings were built into alcoves in the canyon walls some eight hundred years ago, then Cortez and Moab with a rest day among the arches and the slickrock. Torrey, Bryce Canyon and Zion follow, then the Valley of Fire and back to Las Vegas. Prices are quoted in US dollars, per person, and vary by bike. Fifteen nights at this pace covers the Colorado Plateau properly, and the roads between the parks are consistently better riding than the roads inside them. Spring and autumn are the seasons to aim for: Death Valley and the lower desert are punishing in midsummer, and the higher ground around Bryce can hold snow well into April.
