The route

Frontier Offroad runs this ten day expedition south out of Ulaanbaatar and into the Gobi, with eight riding days and around 1,400 kilometres covered between them. The company is run out of Singapore and Mongolia and keeps its groups small, travelling with its own crew, a mechanic and a 4×4 moving alongside the bikes.

The ground changes constantly. Desert tracks and rocky trails give way to rolling sand dunes, river crossings and long stretches of open steppe, and the route takes in the Flaming Cliffs, the red sandstone escarpment where the first dinosaur eggs were found, before finishing among the grasslands around the Orkhon Waterfall. The sand is the part most riders remember, and the part that sets the experience level.

The motorcycle is included and comes with fuel, mechanical support and a Frontier riding jersey. Nights are split between a hotel in Ulaanbaatar at each end, on single occupancy, and nomadic ger camps in between, shared. All meals, snacks and drinks are included, along with national park fees, airport transfers and the cultural stops arranged along the way. A pre-departure group call and daily briefings come as standard.

Twelve departures run between early May and late September 2027, each of them ten days long. Frontier asks for intermediate or better off-road experience and is clear that this is not a beginner course. Flights, visas, insurance and personal riding kit are not included, and anyone wanting a ger to themselves pays a supplement. Riders should expect long days, remote camps and very little phone signal, which is rather the point.

Accommodation
