The route

Forty-five nights through nine countries, from Cape Town to Nairobi, reaching the gorilla forests of Rwanda and Uganda overland rather than by air. It is primarily a bring-your-own-bike expedition, and that is the only rider price published; hire bikes are quoted on request.

The southern African leg covers familiar Compass ground: the Cederberg, Namaqualand, the Orange River into Namibia, Ai Ais, Fish River Canyon, the Namib with Dune 45 and Deadvlei, Swakopmund, the Skeleton Coast, Vingerklip and Etosha, then the Caprivi Strip and the Kavango to Lianshulu, Chobe with a sunset cruise, and Victoria Falls by way of the remote Pandamatenga border.

Zambia follows with Kapishya Hot Springs and Shiwa N’gandu, an improbable English country house built in the Northern Rhodesian bush in the 1920s and still lived in by the same family. Tanzania comes next at Lake Tanganyika, the longest freshwater lake in the world and the second deepest, with Lakeshore Lodge and Kigoma, and a boat to Gombe Stream for chimpanzee trekking, where Jane Goodall began her work in 1960.

Rwanda and Kigali lead to Uganda and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, where the gorilla trekking is the object of the whole journey. Permits are strictly limited and expensive, the forest is steep and wet, and the hour allowed with a habituated group is worth the six weeks of riding it took to get there, though nothing in a forest can be promised. Kampala, Jinja at the source of the Nile, Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha close the route into Nairobi. Prices are quoted in US dollars, per person.
