6 nights through Italy

Six nights from Puglia to Rome, self-guided, in a supercar sourced by the operator, with the price quoted on application.

Southern Italy is the right place for this. The roads in Puglia and Basilicata are empty, the Amalfi Coast is the most photographed stretch of tarmac in Europe, and Rome at the end gives the trip a proper finish.

Puglia opens it, the heel of the country, where the olive groves run to the horizon and the towns are white rather than terracotta. Matera follows, a city of cave dwellings cut into a ravine that was inhabited continuously for nine thousand years, abandoned as a slum in the 1950s and is now a world heritage site and considerably smarter than it was. The Amalfi Coast comes next, a cliff road carved above the sea between Salerno and Sorrento, which is slow, narrow and worth every minute of it, and Rome closes the route.

A sourced supercar for the duration, luxury hotels throughout and a planned route are included; international flights, fuel and unspecified meals are not. The price is given on application. Spring and autumn are the seasons, since the Amalfi Coast in August moves at walking pace and the southern heat is considerable. Seven days is a well-judged length for this part of Italy, and the cars being supplied means no shipping, no insurance argument and no three-day drive down through France to get there. Matera is the stop most guests would happily have stayed longer in, and the cars are allocated as registrations come in, so the choice narrows as the event fills.
