6 nights through Australia

Six nights and 1,097 kilometres in a loop from Perth in a campervan, down the Leeuwin-Naturaliste coast and round to Albany, planned with families in mind.

Busselton and Dunsborough come first on Geographe Bay, then Prevelly at the mouth of the Margaret River, where the surf competitions are held. The caves are the distinctive part: a limestone ridge runs the length of this coast and holds several hundred of them, with Mammoth Cave open to walk through on a self-guided tour and Lake Cave reached down three hundred steps into a collapsed chamber, where a suspended calcite table hangs above still water.

Hamelin Bay follows, where stingrays come into the shallows beside the old boat ramp, then Augusta at the southwestern tip below the Cape Leeuwin lighthouse. Pemberton comes next in the karri forest, Walpole with the tingle trees and the treetop walk, then Denmark and Albany on the Southern Ocean before the inland run back to Perth.

Britz supply the camper and the day-by-day plan, and the hire is priced live per vehicle rather than per person; campsites, fuel, ferries, park fees and activities are all extra, with a nil-excess insurance pack available at booking. Seven days for 1,097 kilometres is a reasonable pace, and the caves, the stingrays and the treetop walk are all things children remember. Everything is sealed, so a standard camper handles it. The two caves are run with their own separate tours, and both are better booked than chanced in the school holidays. Hamelin Bay is the stop that tends to surprise people, since the stingrays come in close enough to stand beside in knee-deep water.
