The route

Frontier Offroad runs this ten day expedition west from Ulaanbaatar into the Khangai, the mountain and lake country that fills the middle of Mongolia. Eight of the days are spent riding and the route covers around 1,600 kilometres, making it the longer of the company’s two scheduled expeditions.

It is a greener trip than the Gobi crossing. The riding links rocky climbs and river crossings with fast, flowing tracks across wide open grassland, and the days run between highland lakes and broad river valleys. There are nights in ger camps, time with the herding families who live along the route, and stops at monasteries sitting in near-empty valleys below enormous boulder fields.

The motorcycle is included, along with fuel, mechanical support and a Frontier riding jersey, and a 4×4 and mechanic travel with the group throughout. Accommodation is a hotel in Ulaanbaatar at the start and end on single occupancy, with ger camps in between on a shared basis. All meals, snacks and drinks are covered, as are national park fees, airport transfers and the cultural experiences built into the route.

The same twelve departure dates run from early May to late September 2027. Frontier rates the expedition intermediate to advanced, so it suits riders already comfortable standing on the pegs over rough ground rather than those learning on the trip. Flights, visas, insurance and personal riding equipment are excluded, and single occupancy in the gers carries a supplement. Weather in the Khangai turns quickly, which is part of what makes the light there so good.
