14 nights through Morocco

Fourteen nights into Morocco by sea rather than by air, starting in Spain and crossing to Africa by ferry. Own bike aboard the ferry or a hired BMW.

A Parador near Malaga opens it with a welcome dinner over the Mediterranean, then the crossing to Ceuta, which is Spanish territory on the African coast and therefore a border to be ridden through rather than flown over, which sets the tone for the trip.

The route then runs south through the country and over the Tizi n’Tichka, the High Atlas pass that climbs above 2,000 metres on the main road south, to Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO listed ksar of earthen towers that film crews have been using for sixty years. The Dades and Todra gorges are an optional ride, and both are worth taking: the Todra narrows to a slot a few metres wide between walls three hundred metres high.

Merzouga follows at the edge of the Sahara, with a short camel trek out to a Berber camp among the dunes of Erg Chebbi, dinner under the stars and a night in a tent. Fes closes the route to the north, by way of the cedar forests where Barbary apes live, for the oldest and largest medina in the world, which has thousands of streets and no cars in any of them. Hotels, breakfasts, dinners as listed, the ferry, maps and GPS routes are included, with fuel and other meals separate. The price is quoted per person. Riding in rather than flying in adds Spain at both ends and means a rider arrives on a familiar bike, which on roads this unfamiliar counts for a good deal.
