The route

Twelve days through the Norwegian fjords, and the hikes are as much the point as the driving, which is the right balance in this part of the country.

Forsand opens it with two nights and a private guided hike to Preikestolen, reached by canoe and then a forest trail. The Pulpit Rock is a flat shelf six hundred metres above the Lysefjord with no railing of any kind, and a cruise on the fjord below is optional.

Jondal follows for two nights along the Ryfylke route past the twin falls at Latefossen, the stave church at Roldal and Folgefonna National Park, with an optional glacier hike or a floating sauna. Aurland then gets two nights via the Hardanger highway, with a boat cruise on the Naeroyfjord, UNESCO listed and walled by cliffs up to 1,700 metres, and a hike up Mount Prest.

Skjolden follows for a night on Sognefjord, the longest and deepest fjord in Norway, reached past the stave churches at Borgund and Urnes, which are among the oldest surviving wooden buildings in Europe and were raised with the timber jointed rather than nailed. Geiranger closes the fjord section with two nights via the Sognefjellet road past Galdhopiggen, the highest peak in northern Europe, and the Jostedalsbreen glacier, with the Trollstigen on the way out. Original Travel include the hire car, accommodation, the guided hikes and cruises, concierge access, a 24-hour helpline and carbon absorption. International flights and most meals are separate. Prices run from 3,900 to 4,950 pounds per person. Several of these mountain roads are closed by snow outside summer.
