The route

Fifteen nights from Cape Town to Windhoek by motorcycle, riding between the game parks rather than being driven through them. The bike hire is included in the rider price, and a lowered F750 GS is available on request at no charge.

Chapman’s Peak Drive and False Bay open it, then the Overberg to Arniston and L’Agulhas at the southern tip of Africa, and the Klein Karoo by way of the Tradouws Pass, with the Aquila reserve beyond it.

The Cederberg follows, with the Stadsaal caves and their San rock art, some of it thousands of years old, then Clanwilliam, the Papkuilsfontein homestead above the Oorlogskloof canyon, Nieuwoudtville and Springbok before the Namibian border.

Fish River Canyon comes next with a night at the Gondwana Canyon Roadhouse, then Burgsdorf, Duwisib Castle, built by a German officer in 1909 in the middle of nowhere and still furnished, and Sesriem for the Namib Naukluft. Dune 40, Dune 45 and Deadvlei follow, then the Tropic of Capricorn and Swakopmund on the Atlantic, the Skeleton Coast, the Erongo region and Omaruru. Outjo leads to Etosha and the ride finishes at Windhoek. Prices are quoted in US dollars, per person, and no wildlife sighting can be promised. Namibia is close to ideal motorcycling country: long sightlines, almost no traffic, and gravel roads graded well enough that a loaded adventure bike is comfortable on them. The offer of a lowered bike at no extra cost is worth noting too, since a tall adventure machine on loose gravel is the single thing that puts shorter riders off trips like this one.
