5 nights through United Kingdom

Five nights round Scotland’s North Coast 500, self-guided, in the guest’s own car, with a different hotel every night.

The route is Britain’s best known driving loop and the operator has made one deliberate choice worth knowing about: there is no final night in Inverness, so the last leg home is left entirely open rather than scheduled.

Peebles Hydro opens it in the Borders, then Inverness through the Cairngorms, with Loch Ness a few miles away. Bettyhill follows by way of John o’ Groats, with the hotel looking over Torrisdale Bay on the north coast. Lochinver comes next past Ben Loyal, at the Inver Lodge above the bay, in country of wild hills, caves, seals, red deer and eagles. Gairloch follows on the west coast with the hotel on the beach, and the drive out goes over the Bealach na Ba to Applecross, which climbs to 626 metres in hairpins with no barrier on the drop and is the most demanding stretch of road in Britain.

Five nights across the named hotels, five breakfasts, five dinners including the welcome dinner, a road book with maps, drives and local attractions, a commemorative rally plate and parking at every hotel are all included, though local charges may apply. May to September is the window, since the Bealach na Ba closes in snow and the midges on the west coast are at their worst in high summer. A different bed every night is the trade for covering the whole loop in six days.
