20 nights through Australia

Twenty nights from Broome to Darwin in a 4WD camper, up the Dampier Peninsula first and then inland on the Gibb River Road, which makes this the fullest Kimberley itinerary Britz publish.

Cygnet Bay comes first at the top of the peninsula, a working pearl farm that has been in the same family since the 1940s and still grows South Sea pearls, with the Whalesound campground and Willie Creek on the way up.

The Gibb follows, with Windjana Gorge and its freshwater crocodiles, Bell and Manning gorges, and Ellenbrae Station, which is known across the north for its scones. El Questro and Kununurra come next below the Cockburn Range, then the route crosses into the Territory for Pine Creek, Gunlom in Kakadu, where the pools step down the escarpment, and the Merl campground near Ubirr before Darwin.

Britz supply the camper and the day-by-day plan, and the hire is priced live per vehicle rather than per person; campsites, fuel, ferries, park fees and activities are all extra, with a nil-excess insurance pack available at booking. Twenty-one days is what the Kimberley actually needs, and this itinerary is paced accordingly rather than racing the Gibb in four days. The pindan tracks on the peninsula and the Gibb’s corrugations are both hard on tyres, and the season runs roughly May to October. This is a one-way hire, so a relocation fee is worth checking at booking. Cygnet Bay at the start is the detail that sets this itinerary apart from the other Gibb River Road routes, and the peninsula is worth the three days it takes.
