Through Iceland
Boreal’s Super Truck Tours put you in a 4×4 expedition truck for a multi-day trip through Iceland. The trucks are former fire trucks, converted into motorhomes with a shower and toilet, hot and cold water, a gas stove, a fridge, heating, USB and 220V sockets, Bluetooth and WiFi. Boreal says that equipment allows stays far from the beaten track and from civilisation.
The tours come in two forms, private or convoy, and in seven categories set out in Boreal’s terms. In the private versions you either rent the truck and drive it yourself, rent it with a private local guide on board while you drive, or travel with a Boreal driver-guide who drives. In the convoy versions a local guide leads by VHF radio from a separate truck, rides with you as co-driver, or drives your truck. A final category lets you bring your own all-wheel-drive motorhome truck to join a convoy led by locals.
Drivers need a licence in category C1 for the two-seat truck or C for the six-seat truck, or a licence issued before 1 June 1993, and a minimum age of 25. Trucks are allowed on all open F-roads, and off-road driving is forbidden. Pick-up and drop-off are at Boreal in Reykjavik, and the terms say one to two hours are needed to learn the truck before you set off. Fuel and meals are not included.
Boreal presents the trucks as suited to nature lovers, photographers, adventurers and anyone who wants to travel differently, and to families and friends. Tours are given in English, with other languages on request, and departures from outside Reykjavik are available on request. The page does not publish a price, so contact Boreal. The terms on the operator’s site are dated 2022, so confirm the current conditions.
