Eight nights from Munich through the Black Forest and Basel to the high Swiss passes

Eight nights from Munich through the Black Forest and Basel to the high Swiss passes – Susten, Furka, Grimsel, Nufenen and Klausen – with two guides, the car and the hotels arranged.

The tour opens with a champagne reception and group dinner at the Hilton in Munich. The next morning you collect the car and drive west into the Black Forest, to the spa town of Baden-Baden.

From there the route runs south through Triberg to Basel, then into the Alps. There are two nights at the Giessbach Hotel above the lake, a day on the Susten, Furka, Grimsel and Nufenen passes, and another over the Klausen, before the drive back out of Switzerland into Germany for the last night.

Baden-Baden is the first stop, at a hotel in the centre of town, with the evening free to find your own restaurant. On day three you drive to Triberg, the home of the cuckoo clock, carry on through the Black Forest to lunch at a lakeside spot, and reach Basel by evening. The hotel is in the centre, so the old town, the cathedral and the riverside are a walk away.

Day four leaves Basel for Grindelwald and a cliff walk high above the valley, then ends at the Giessbach Hotel, a grand Victorian hotel beside waterfalls, looking out over the lake. You stay two nights. Day five is yours – take the boat across to Interlaken, or do nothing at all.

Day six is the one the tour is built around. You drive the Susten, high up and one of UDA’s favourites, then the Furka, where James Bond chased Goldfinger, then the Grimsel, past its mountain dams, and the Nufenen. The day ends with a private tour of a Second World War mountain fortress.

On day seven you drive the Klausen Pass through green Alpine farmland. In the afternoon there is a toboggan run – UDA says it’s Europe’s longest – and the evening is a traditional Swiss fondue dinner with the group at the hotel.

The last driving day winds out of Switzerland and back into Germany to the starting hotel. The evening brings certificates, UDA’s prize draw for a canvas print of your favourite photograph from the trip, and a final toast. The next day you travel home.

This is a guided group tour. Two UDA guides travel with you from start to finish, and there’s a road book with detailed routes and map links. The rental car is included, with main driver insurance and breakdown cover. A second driver costs an extra £20 a day.

Eight nights in hotels are included, with parking and taxes, breakfast every day, five group dinners and the champagne reception. The trip is photographed and filmed for you. Room upgrades are available if you ask when you book.

The price is £5,850 per person, based on two people sharing. A non-refundable £2,200 deposit secures your place.
