10 nights through Portugal
Ten nights, self-guided, linking Portugal’s main wine regions on a route that runs south to north. Caminos arranges the hotels and an economy hire car, and calls it a wine-lover’s delight and a good way to discover small-town, rural Portugal.
The page highlights Alentejo wines, the velvety reds of the Dao, the Douro valley, the oldest demarcated wine region in the world, and Vinho Verde in the Minho. Between tastings come hilltop fortress towns, a World Heritage city in Evora, scenic river trips and plenty of regional food. The trip finishes with a small city break in Porto, where the wine trade has a long history of links with Britain.
Two nights in the Alto Alentejo cover Evora’s walls and Roman ruins, the fortress towns of Monsaraz, Marvao and Castelo de Vide, the pottery towns among the vines and the marble towns of Vila Vicosa and Estremoz. Viseu and the Dao wine region take two nights, with the Grao Vasco museum and the Caramulo car museum. Two nights in the Alto Douro include the boat trip from Peso da Regua to Pinhao and the tiled station there. Two nights on the Minho coast follow, taking in Viana do Castelo, Ponte de Lima and the border fortress towns, and two nights in Porto finish the route.
The price covers hotels on a bed and breakfast basis for two sharing a double room, an economy four-door hire car for those flying, a regional guide book and a personal travel app with restaurant suggestions and weather forecasts, and instructions for finding every hotel. Flights, one-way and cross-border car hire charges, extras such as a second driver, garage parking and local tourist taxes are not included. Caminos quotes about £1,250 per person as an indicative mid-season figure for 10 nights, and adapts the route, hotels and airports to each traveller.
