The route

Twenty-one nights from Lisbon across the Strait of Gibraltar into Morocco and back, two continents and three countries, by motorcycle. Riders may bring their own bike, which is the cheaper option, or hire one.

Lisbon starts it, then Sagres at the southwestern corner of Europe, where Henry the Navigator is said to have kept his school of navigation, the Serra de Monchique, Tavira, and into Andalucia for Arcos de la Frontera before the ferry across the straits.

Chefchaouen comes first in Morocco, the blue village in the Rif, then Fez and its medina, which has thousands of lanes and no cars in any of them, the Middle Atlas and Midelt, and the edge of the Sahara with a camel trek and a night in a luxury tented camp. The Route of 1000 Kasbahs follows through the Todra Gorge and Boumalne Dades to Ait Ben Haddou, then the Tizi n’Tichka over the High Atlas to Marrakesh.

Atlas backcountry and remote villages follow, then UNESCO listed Meknes and the Roman ruins at Volubilis, Asilah, and the crossing back into Spain. Ronda and the El Tajo gorge come next, then Andalucian backcountry, Granada and the Alhambra, the Caliphate’s Way, the Pueblos Blancos and the Mezquita at Cordoba, before Portugal again for Evora and the cork and eucalyptus country back to Lisbon. Prices are quoted in US dollars, per person. The contrast is the point: three weeks that begin and end in a European capital and spend the middle fortnight somewhere entirely unlike it.
