10 nights through Morocco

Morocco from the Atlantic to the Sahara and back, guided. Eleven days out of Casablanca, ten nights and around 1,470 miles, taking in Rabat, the cedar forests of Ifrane, a night in the dunes at Merzouga, the Dades Gorge and the Atlas Mountains before Marrakech.

The first few days climb steadily inland. Rabat’s Kasbah of the Udayas, the Hassan Tower and the Chellah ruins all come early on, then the route reaches Ifrane, a hill town of pitched roofs and cedar forest that Moroccans call their Switzerland, complete with a stone lion carved into the rock. Erfoud follows, an oasis town out on the edge of the desert proper.

Merzouga is the night most people book for. It is only 34 miles from Erfoud, and the last stretch is made by 4×4 across the sand to the Erg Chebbi dunes, with a camel ride at sunset, dinner at a desert camp and a fire under a sky with nothing competing with it. The Dades Gorge and the Atlas Mountains road to Marrakech follow, then a full day in the city for the Bahia Palace, the Majorelle Gardens and the Jemaa el-Fnaa, before Taghazout, Essaouira and the coast road back.

EAGLERIDER provides the motorcycle, the tour leader, all ten nights, the 4×4 transfer and the group dinners. Fuel, most meals and insurance are separate. For riders who want desert, high mountains and a working souk inside a fortnight, with all of the logistics handled for them, Morocco is very hard to beat.
