14 nights through Spain
Fourteen nights, self-guided, across Catalonia from the Mediterranean to the high Pyrenees and back to the sea. Caminos runs it one way, using the many flights into Girona and Reus, although it can also be done as a circular tour from any of the three Catalan airports.
The title says it: sea and mountains. Caminos describes watching flamingos in the Ebro Delta’s rice fields one day and hiking in the Pyrenees the next, with excellent regional food and a rich heritage in between. Wine plays a large part, from the Priorat and Montsant region to the cathedrals of wine, the Modernist wineries of Catalonia.
Three nights in the Priorat and Montsant wine region start the route, with Siurana, La Cartoixa de Scala Dei and a trip to Reus for Modernist architecture. The Ebro Delta and Tortosa follow for three nights, with birdwatching, rice and seafood, Miravet and the Els Ports mountains. Three nights in the Val d’Aran, Boi and Aneu give access to Aiguestortes National Park. Two nights in La Garrotxa Volcanic Park lead to the finish on the Costa Brava, with the Cami de Ronda coastal path, Girona and the Dali museum at Figueres.
The price covers hotels on a bed and breakfast basis for two sharing a double room, an economy four-door hire car for those flying, a regional guide book and a personal travel app with restaurant suggestions and weather forecasts, and instructions for finding every hotel. Flights, one-way and cross-border car hire charges, extras such as a second driver, garage parking and local tourist taxes are not included. Caminos quotes about £1,750 per person as an indicative mid-season figure for 14 nights, and adapts the route, hotels and airports to each traveller.
